💰️ Americans Doing Better Than Ever at Saving for Retirement
The news is often negative. Financial news lately has been no exception.
But sometimes it’s good to bask in the glow of positive developments, of which there have been plenty.
For example: Americans with 401(k) accounts are saving a higher percentage of their paychecks than ever.
Fidelity reports that Americans are saving 14.3% of their income – an all-time record that’s up from 13.5% in 2020.
The Wall Street Journal’s headline says plenty: “Americans Are Finally Saving Almost What They’re Supposed to for Retirement.” (The publication cited a 15% savings rate recommendation.)
More than 17% of those with 401(k) accounts at Fidelity increased their contribution percentages in Q1 (5% decreased contributions).
A huge catalyst? More than one-third of companies that automatically enroll employees do so at 5%+ of their earnings (3% was the norm historically). Automatic enrollment is nearly a foregone conclusion as well.
That’s great news regarding people’s behaviors saving for retirement.
