✈️ Europe, Tired of Tourist Overcrowding, Adds Rules
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, 61 years old, is expected to marry Lauren Sanchez tomorrow in Venice, Italy.
The destination wedding created a concentrated focus on American travel to Europe.
In 1950, Venice claimed nearly 185,000 residents. That number is less than 50,000 today – not including the 75,000 daily tourists.
There are 8,300 Airbnb listings in the city and souvenir shops have replaced some grocery stores and medical offices. The city instituted a 5 euro entry tax for tourists, doubling it for late bookings. And some residents protested the coming Bezos wedding earlier this month.
In other European cities, residents sprayed tourists with water guns, rolled suitcases through the street and called it a “noisy stroll” and even saw staff at the Louvre go on an impromptu strike due to overcrowding.
A record 747 million international tourists visited Europe in 2024. Countries across Europe are instituting additional taxes, cracking down on short-term rentals and capping daily visitors.
It’s a growing trend and something to be aware of and research when you plan your next trip to Europe.
