👨‍💼 The Rise of the Infinite Workday

As work becomes increasingly digital and remote, the concept of “business hours” also is eroding, Microsoft found.

The company recently released its 2025 Work Trend Index Annual Report based on stats it collected via its software users (Microsoft 365, etc.).

40%: Share of people online at 6 a.m. who are reading work emails.

117: Number of emails the average worker gets daily (and most workers skim each email in less than one minute.)

2 minutes: Average time between interruptions (email, phone notifications, meetings, etc.) during work hours.

50+: Number of messages the average employee sends and receives outside of core business hours.

29%: Share of workers who re-open their work email after 5 p.m. and before 10 p.m. Nearly 20% check their work email before noon on Saturday and Sunday.

60%: Share of meetings that are impromptu (aren’t scheduled on calendars).
