✈️ Airline Competition Leading To More Free Wi-Fi
Want to log in on your flight but don’t want to open your wallet?
The future is yours, my friend.
Thanks to stiff competition from other airlines, the holdouts are starting to cave.
In a symbolic move for the industry, American Airlines is currently testing free in-flight Wi-Fi.
That’s right … one of the full-fare airlines, which made $8.4 billion in revenue on things outside of the actual plane tickets in 2023, and which charges $35 for Wi-Fi on cross-country flights, is considering free internet.
Delta already offers free Wi-Fi to loyalty program members and T-Mobile customers, while United is adding free Wi-Fi thanks to a deal with Starlink.
American continues to grow its top-line ancillary revenue thanks mostly to co-branded credit cards. That business gave American $6.1 billion in 2024 – a year-over-year gain of 17%.
